Date night

If you are at a loss for fun date ideas, add this one to the list: sportsplex. We went to one in east Durham and had more fun than I thought we would. So either I had low expectations, or Doug makes anything fun, or it's nice to have some alone time. Or all three.

See the resemblance?

My form is horrible.
And my hands are still bruised!
Aye.

I barely made the cut ;).

Afterwards we had to get pizza, of course. Ben loved it, of course.

How else do you eat pizza?

Asheville

We do get out of Durham sometimes. Every once in a while. The most recent was yesterday - Chapel Hill. Haha, okay so going to church hardly counts. We went to Asheville! As always, we had a blast and I hardly took any pictures. So most (all) of these are courtesy of Ranita (she and Shiwen came with us!).

On Saturday we went to downtown Asheville (say it like Downton Abbey - it's a lot more fun!).

In that cool place with lots of art...
I forgot the name - anyone know it?

Some street performers

Lunch at a Mediterranean place. The food was delicious
but this picture sums  up our experience there with Benjamin: hectic, frenzied...

We couldn't leave without Doug playing some chess!

A pistachio turtle. Oh that was delicious.

Fortunately Ben fell asleep after lunch for the remaining
 2-3 hours of our pedestrian-ing.

On Sunday we went to church and then to a park in Granny's neighborhood. Not to mention the delicious chocolate cake Granny made or the yummy Chinese food Aunt Heather made for us that night!

Doug and Shiwen are playing the Chinese version of Jacks.
Neither of them were very good at it haha.

Thank you, Ranita for taking such lovely pictures :).

And that was how we spent spring break.

Surprise visit from Grandma and Grandpa! (and Aunt & Uncle, of course)

I can remember three (maybe four) times my family drove to go on vacation. So imagine my surprise when my family decided to drive to visit us in North Carolina! I was thrilled to have them come and they did not disappoint - we had a blast.

This is essentially the only picture I took while they were here, but it sums up their visit nicely - playing with Benjamin. He absolutely adored his Uncle Daniel, frequently preferred Sarah over me, cackled with his Grandpa, and snuggled with Grandma. I absolutely love visiting and being visited by family. Plus things are "accidentally" left at my house: chocolate covered blueberries, milano cookies, a $20 bill, apples, yogurt, Twix, a pair of darn tough socks (??). Does everyone's mom do that? :)

Our weekend (and bellies) was filled with food from Durham's best eateries: Q shack, Tonali, Sitar, Ox and Rabbit, and homemade pizza. We toured Duke Gardens, went swimming, and watched General Conference.  My favorite talk was Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's talk from Sunday afternoon. I can't wait to read it again. I don't know how anyone gets through 8 hours of conference without busying their hands or "resting" their eyes.  This year I worked on burial gowns for UNC hospital. The pattern I used was quite simple and it went faster than I anticipated.

I think it looks precious though my heart aches for the parents who need it.

On a happier note, my sister got engaged! Wahoo!

Congratulations you little lovebirds.

Not your mother's cooking - literally!

Happy pi day +1.

Yesterday Miriam called me telling me to make a pie. I suggested buying one instead. Well, because I'm frugal and I've never celebrated pi day before I decided not to buy a pie. Then I remembered I had an extra pie crust in my fridge and decided to make one anyway. And I made a pizza pie. BONUS!

I'm not buying a nice camera any time soon so you'll have to suffer with my less-than-adequate photos...

banana creme pi(e)!!
I used Cooks recipe and it turned out pretty good. It's a custardy vanilla filling with meringue on top. Still, I love my mother's version so much more that I'll never try another recipe and just stick to hers!

mushroom pizza
Oh how I love homemade pizza. This particular pizza had about 10:1 ration of toppings to crust, haha. In my opinion, that's the way to do it.

138

The first month of my new cleaning goal (read: regimen) is complete! I successfully mopped, planned meals and spent 15 min in the master bedroom each Monday.

Fate had a interesting way of jumpstarting my Tuesday cleaning today... Let's not go into too much detail and just say that somehow my carpet is now decorated with 138 in (11 feet, 6 inches!! Yes, I measured) of sweet potato chicken puree. BONUS: it happened in the TV room so it's totally counting as my cleaning today. Hurrah!

Also, while out and about, Ben had his second blowout ever (the first one happened minutes after coming home from the hospital). Of course I didn't bring diapers, wipes, or extra clothes...because Ben is 9 months now and we can last a few hours without the monster bag, right? Fortunately we were at Ben's friend's house so they outfitted him after he had his second bath of the day. (Thank you,  Karrie!) Usually he gets 3 baths a week - if he's behaved, that is ;).

So, how about that? Oh, and I got the puree out, mostly.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Yes, I know Chinese New Year was a few weeks ago. We celebrated it with some friends (Ranita and Shiwen) - the first time I have ever celebrated Chinese New Year! Oh, Ranita makes some wonderful food, let me tell you. Well, let me show you!

I don't know what everything is called but that's chicken soup in the bowls.
Notice that we have forks and they have chopsticks? hah!

Dumplings and some delicious tofu.

Ribs on the left; fish on the right.

A party gift!
We are so spoiled to have such wonderful friends :). AND we got to take home extra dumplings. YUM!
Oh, did I mention that Ranita is famous? She was a guest on a cooking show in China and has a popular Chinese food blog. Motivation enough to learn mandarin!

Happy (belated) Chinese New Year.
Welcome, year of the snake!! .

Organizing my home, organizing my life

If you know me at all, you know that organization does not come naturally to me. When I do try to organize or clean it takes forever because this is what happens: I see the messy bed, while making the bed I see the laundry pile, while doing the laundry, I look at the disorganized shelf above, while organizing the shelf I'm reminded of birthday cards I need to mail out, I sit down to write the cards but the table still has breakfast on it, I put the food in the fridge when I notice some food went bad, I throw it away but the garbage is full, I take out the garbage and come back inside to a still messy home, feeling frazzled and like I haven't accomplished anything though 30 minutes have passed. Some people I've talked to say this thought process is normal and there's nothing you can do about it. Well I respectfully disagree because I know people who don't think this way, they have a clean home, and I want to be like that. I want to change.

Some (semi-painful) self-reflection left me with these thoughts:

If I can't manage these 854 sq ft. with one child (and one husband...) how will I manage a real house with more children? And let's take this a step further, how can I expect Heavenly Father to trust me to manage even more? It boils down to three things. 1. I see managing my home as an undesirable task. 2. I haven't learned how to keep up with my home. 3. I'm being a lazy bum. So I'm going to fix this. I'm going to fix this because I'm happier when my house is clean and my home is organized. I'm going to fix this because it is an attribute I feel necessary to gain in this life because it will be necessary in the next. I'm going to fix this because this is my garden and I'm going to dress it and keep it (Moses 3:15).

Here's my game plan. I have assigned a chore and a room to each day of the week. In February it is only mandatory for me to do Mondays chores on Mondays though that doesn't preclude me from doing more. Each new month I will add a new day. By the end of the year, I will be doing each day's chores, every week.   Steady and slow wins the race, right?

Monday: mop/ master bedroom/ plan meals
So on Mondays I will mop all floors that can be mopped, spend 15 minutes deep cleaning or organizing some area in the master bedroom, and plan meals for the next week.
Tuesday: tops/ TV room
Tuesday is the day to dust or wipe down the tops of all surfaces and spend 15 minutes deep cleaning some area in the TV room.
Wednesday: walls/ windows/ washroom
You get the idea.
Thursday: thorough/ closets
Thorough means I clean under or in between sneaky places. I can't think of how to alliterate closets or kitchen with Thursday or friday so they're just tacked on... please forgive me.
Friday: fridge/ kitchen
Saturday: spare room
This is Ben's room.

So I think that covers every area of the house and every chore that doesn't need to be done more than once a week. Did I miss something? Can you think of more fun alliteration?

I'd love to hear what you do to keep up with your home. What are some tricks you use? What sets you back and how to you get back on track? How do you not be lazy?! Okay, go!
